Harold Pierce, age 87, of Canton, MN, died on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2006 at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church with Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 9:30 a.m. at the church Saturday morning.
Harold Robert Pierce was born on November 30, 1918, in Canton, Minnesota, the son of Harry and Etta (Hubbel) Smith. He was adopted by his relatives, Mr. and Mrs. John Pierce, after the death of his mother, when he was three days old. He attended school in Canton thru the eighth grade. Harold was baptized on April 10, 1949 at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. He married Gloria Espeseth on April 17, 1949 at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. To this union, four children were born: Lee, Lonnie, Lynn and Lindsay. Harold farmed the home farm in northwestern Winneshiek County for many years and also worked for Wapsie Produce for many years. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing poker with his grandchildren, gambling at the Boat, and playing pull tabs at the Mabel Legion.
Harold’s survivors include his four children: Lee (Marlene) Pierce, Eagan, MN; Lonnie (JoAnn) Pierce, Bluffton, IA; Lynn Pierce, Borrego Springs, CA and Lindsay (Sue) Pierce, Cresco, IA. Six grandchildren: Chad (Marit) Pierce, Corey Pierce, Lisa Pierce, Michael (Lori) Pierce, John (Staci) Pierce and Mystie Pierce. Three great grandchildren: Hayden, Autumn and Noah Pierce.
Harold was preceded in death by his natural parents; his adoptive parents; his wife, Gloria on March 3, 1994 and his sister, Thelma Hubbel.
