We lost a brother and good friend early Sunday morning, October 17, after his quiet, dignified struggle with esophageal cancer. Skip, as he was affectionately known throughout his 67 years, died at Wellington Place, his place of residence since 2001.
Skip was born on March 31, 1943, in Berwyn, Illinois, and raised in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield. He graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School, attended Lyons Township Junior College, then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. He taught high school English for some years, first in California, then back in Carol Stream, Illinois.
Skip began playing guitar at an early age and was a regular member of popular local bands. He began teaching guitar at the Ax-in-Hand Guitar Store in DeKalb, Illinois, while in college and eventually opened another branch of this franchise in Urbana, Illinois. In time, Skip bought the business, and the First National Guitar Store enjoyed many years of success among both amateur and professional musicians.
Skip made a host of friends throughout his life who enjoyed his intelligence, razor-sharp wit, creativity, and gentleness. He is survived by brother Fred, sister Jessica, and cousins. An informal memorial gathering will be held at Wellington Place on Sunday, November 14, at 2:00 p.m. Friends of Skip and the family are invited to come and help us celebrate his life.
