Lori Ottney, age 64, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at her home following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 26, 2009, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be at a later date in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00-6:00 p.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Lori, to Hospice of Winneshiek County and to Winneshiek County First Responders, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
Lori Christine (Hurlbut) Ottney, was born on June 13, 1945, the daughter of Warren and Dorothy (Haines) Hurlbut in Charles City, Iowa. Lori graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1964 and then worked as a waitress in Florida. She returned to Decorah and went to work at Luther College in food service for thirty-eight years, retiring in November 2008. Lori married Edward “Ed” Ottney on April 23, 1971, at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa. Lori enjoyed her cat, “Bob”, reading books, doing puzzles, watching the QVC channel on TV and cheering for the Denver Broncos. She especially enjoyed visiting with her friends and having lunch with her Luther co-workers. Lori was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Calmar.
Lori’s survivors include her husband: Edward “Ed” Ottney, Decorah, IA. One step-son: Cory (Lori) Kleppe, Waterloo, IA. Four step-grandchildren: Mason, Ryan, Erica and Destiny. One brother: David (Leslie) Hurlbut, Burnsville, MN. One niece: Jessica Hurlbut and one nephew: Clay Hurlbut. Two sisters-in-law: Nina (Jim) LaPorte, Edinburg, TX and Marvel Tomczak, Jefferson, WI. Her step-father-in-law: Clifford Smorstad, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, along with many friends from Luther College.
Lori was preceded in death by her parents: Warren Hurlbut on April 2, 1955 and Dorothy Hurlbut on Dec. 25, 2001. Her father and mother-in-law: Leonard E. Ottney on April 26, 1969 and Hazel Ottney Smorstad on November 11, 2008. One brother-in-law: Lyle (Bea) Ottney on June 1, 2009. One sister-in-law: Donna Ottney from complications of polio in 1960.
