Ruth McKernan, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 10, 2007, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a brief illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 15, 2007, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and until 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Ruth Carol (Barth) McKernan was born on July 6, 1927, the daughter of John and Anna (Halverson) Barth in Austin, MN. Ruth graduated from Waukon High School. She married Richard McKernan on February23, 1949, in Decorah, Iowa. She taught school at Belle Country School near Waukon, Iowa for one year and at the Knoke Country School for 2 ½ years. Ruth also worked at the Cliff House, J.C. Penney’s, Luther College and was the bookkeeper for McKernan Excavating for many years. Ruth was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the St. Catherine Ladies Circle, the Garden Club and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed rosmaling, crocheting, drives along the Mississippi River, morning coffee with friends, he beloved Yorkie, Mickee, and spending quality time with her family.
Ruth’s survivors include her husband: Richard McKernan, Decorah, IA. Six sons: Greg (Gina) McKernan, Denver, CO; Jim (Pam) McKernan, Cedar Falls, IA; Randy McKernan, Cedar Rapids, IA; Stan (Jane) McKernan, Waterloo, IA; Ron (Cindy) McKernan, Whitehall, WI and Mark McKernan, Denver, CO. Fifteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren. One sister: Ella Anderson, Decorah, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents: John and Anna Barth. One daughter-in-law: Marie McKernan, Denver, CO. One great grandson: Drew McKernan, Denver, CO and her beloved Yorkie, Mickee.
