Dorothy McMahon, 79, of Decorah since 1991, died at home on Wednesday, March 1, 2006.

A celebration of her life will be held at Bass Point Cemetery in Boone, Iowa to coincide with McVicker-Dutton and Sturtz Annual Reunions on June 4, 2006 at 4:30pm.

Dorothy was born in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Blanche (Dutton) and William McVicker; she graduated from Boone High School in 1944, and earned her Normal Teaching Certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Vocal music was always very important to Dorothy, beginning in Junior High and continuing through to her becoming a charter member of the Iowa City Coral Bells (now the Metro Chorus, International Sweet Adelines winners), whose 40th Reunion she attended and participated in last November.

She was married to Robert L. Sturtz of Boone in 1947; they were family farmers until 1962 when they moved to Lone Tree, Iowa. Bob became a Union Carpenter and Dorothy held several office positions, the last with Westinghouse Learning Corporation.

She became a licensed real estate agent and moved to Houston, Texas in August, 1980 where she worked for First City Bank as a marketing/special activities coordinator. She moved back to Boone in 1989 and then lived one year each as the House Mom at fraternity/sorority houses in Ames and Iowa City.

Dorothy retired in 1991, and moved to Decorah to be near her family, where she bought and rehabbed a house in the style of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace in Boone. Robert predeceased Dorothy, as did her second husband Thomas McMahon of Fort Dodge, her sister Vivian Wirtz and her brother Daryl McVicker.

She is survived by her long-term companion Jack Colony of Iowa City; her children RoJene Beard of Decorah and Bob Sturtz of Bethel, Maine; her grandchildren Jessica O’Mara and Chance Beard of Decorah and Winter O’Mara of Sturgeon Bay, WI; and great-grandchildren Ashley, Skye and Storme of Decorah, and Dusty and Brennan of Sturgeon Bay, WI. She is also survived by her sisters Marge Pepper and Joanne Leininger of Boone, Iowa and brothers Jim, Bill and Gary McVicker of Boone, and Califon, New Jersey and many nieces and nephews.
