Richard "Dick" McKernan, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, September 15, 2008, at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 19, 2008, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and until 10:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a scripture service at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Richard “Dick” Charles McKernan was born on October 25, 1922, the son of Ambrose and Elizabeth (Middlekauff) McKernan in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Dick worked for his father on the family farm near Frankville, Iowa. Dick married Ruth Barth on February 23, 1949 in Decorah, Iowa. They moved to Waterloo, where Dick worked for John Deere. He returned to Decorah and ran the Mobil Filling Station for four years. He owned and operated McKernan Excavating from 1964 – 1983. After retirement, Dick enjoyed having coffee with his friends at McDonalds. Dick had many hobbies. He enjoyed hunting (in his younger years), wood working, wood carving, bird watching and his great love, fishing. Dick was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

Dick’s survivors include his six sons: Greg (Gina) McKernan, Denver, CO; Jim (Pam) McKernan, Cedar Falls, IA; Randy McKernan, Cedar Rapids, IA; Stan (Jane) McKernan, Decorah, IA; Ron (Cindi) McKernan, Whitehall, WI and Mark McKernan, Denver, CO. Fifteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Five sisters: Colleen Danielson, Decorah, IA; Lorraine Moeller, Waterloo, IA; Bonnie Headington, Waterloo, IA; Dorothy (Peter) Fiqueroa, Dewey, AZ and Sandy (Dale) Headington, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Jan McKernan, Prior Lake, MN and Ella Anderson, Decorah, IA, along with and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth McKernan on November 10, 2007. His parents: Ambrose and Elizabeth McKernan. Two brothers: Robert and Tom McKernan. One sister: Kay Casey. One daughter-in-law: Marie McKernan and one great grandson: Drew McKernan. Five brothers-in-law: Don “Bud” Casey, Bob Moeller, Gordon Danielson, Duane “Bud” Headington and Oren Anderson.
