Evelyn Mashek, age 94, of Spillville, IA, died Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA, after a short illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, October 27, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA, by Rev. Donald Hawes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA, from 3:00 – 7:00 with a scripture service at 3:00 and a rosary at 4:00
Evelyn Mae (Strnad) Mashek was born on August 15, 1914, the daughter of Wenzil and Elenora (Humpal) Strnad near Spillville, Iowa. Evelyn attended Sumner Township rural school and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. Evelyn married George Mashek on August 25, 1936 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. Together they farmed the Mashek family farm near Calmar and then moved southwest of Spillville, until 1975, when they moved into Spillville. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, fishing, playing card, bingo, crocheting and embroidery and above all, her family. She was a member of the First Slovak Ladies Association, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Sunrise Club.
Evelyn’s survivors include her two sons: James (Mary) Mashek, Jesup, IA and Dave (Sharon) Mashek, Spillville, IA. One daughter: Gloria Mashek, Bettendorf, IA. One grandchild: Matthew Mashek. Three great grandchildren: Amanda Ryherd, Miranda Mashek, and Marrisa Mashek. One great great grandchild: Baylor Ryherd.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents: Wenzil and Elenora Strnad.husband: George 1984. One granddaughter: Janice Mashek in 1988. One grandson: Troy Mashek in 1980. One great granddaughter: Mercedes Mashek. Four sisters: Martha Pecivonsky, Frances Taylor, Clara Kaleshek and Emma Zobeck. Two brothers: Sylvester and Louis Strnad.
