Rev. Kristen H. Kvamme, age 78, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah of complications from a blood disorder.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 16, 2007 at Decorah Lutheran Church by Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik.
There is no visitation. His body was donated to the Department of Anatomy at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, MN. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.
Kristen Hans Kvamme was born May 29, 1928, in Scales Mound, IL, the son of Rolf J. and Hanna (Grovdahl) Kvamme.
Kris graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI with the class of 1949. He attended Luther College in Decorah, IA for 2 years and graduated from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. He then went on to Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, IA and was ordained in 1974 in Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, IA.
Kris was united in marriage with Diane V. Heger on June 28, 1969 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan. To this union three children were born: Kulla Grace, Rolf Theodore and Thea JoHanna.
In 1974, following an internship at Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe, WI, Kris became the pastor of a 3-point parish in Shelly, MN, including Shelly-Marsh River, Bethany and Zion Lutheran Churches. He became the Chaplain of Aase Haugen Homes in 1986, retiring in 1993.
From 1986 to 2007 Kris served as organist at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and served as an Assistant at various worship services, worked on creating the Companion Worship Book, and was the editor of Decorah Lutheran Church’s Newsletter, “The Spirit”. Kris was a member of the Northeast Iowa Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, serving as dean, editor of the newsletter, “The Clarion”, and treasurer.
Survivors include his wife, Diane of Decorah, IA; his three children: Kulla and her husband Clare Mincks of Decorah, IA, Rolf Kvamme and his fiancee Lucy Saia of Chandler, AZ, and Thea and her husband Kevin Gerleman of Decorah, IA; 7 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 2 brothers: John (Rosemary) Kvamme of Dearborn Heights, MI, and Kenneth Kvamme of North Port, FL; and 1 sister, Elaine Jennings of Oakland, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
