Helen Kurash, age 87, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday and until 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service by the St. Mary’s Court of National Catholic Society of the Foresters and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Helen Alvira (Timp) Kurash was born on October 29, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Shaw) Timp in Bluffton Township. She was baptized in St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton. She attended rural schools and high school at St. William’s in Alta Vista. She married Leonard Kurash at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church on October 19, 1936. Helen worked for the Fort Atkinson Hotel and cooked at St. John’s Catholic Grade School, both for two years. She worked as a dedicated and caring nurses aide at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, for twenty years. These were the most rewarding years of her working career. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church, for over sixty-five years, where she sang in the Choir. She was a member of the Ladies Guild, the Rosary Society and the Catholic Order of the Foresters. Helen enjoyed gardening. Her house was adorned with glorious clematis and flowers throughout the gardening season. She loved to bake for friends, church and community events. She loved to travel and did so up to her 84th year, visiting many countries. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend. For the past two years, she was in the loving care of the Rochester West Rehab Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

Helen’s survivors include her two daughters: Janice (Dave) Lyon, Virginia Beach, VA and Patricia (Lawson) Stevens, Elizabethtown, KY. Three sons: Harlan (Lyda) Kurash, Ft. Walton Beach, FL; John (Joan) Kurash, Phoenix, AZ and James Kurash, Columbus, OH. Four grandchildren: Chris (Heide) Kurash, Phoenix, AZ; Shana Callahan, Maple Grove, IL; Lisa (John) Payne, Virginia Beach, VA and Patrick Stevens Elizabethtown, KY. Five great grandsons: Evan, Collin and Austin Callahan, John Payne and Jacob Kurash. Two sisters: Dorothy Reagan, Cedar Rapids, IA and Shirley Rollinger, Dodgeville, WI. One brother: Louis Timp, Galena, IL and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Leonard Kurash on Sept. 30, 1984. Two sisters: Lorraine McGrane and Irene Hildebrand. Seven brothers: Victor, Charles, James, Francis, Willard, Wayne and William Timp.
