Margaret L. Kruchek, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 30, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Paul Jordahl with burial in Phelps Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Thursday one hour before the service at the church.

Margaret Lorraine Kruchek was born March 16, 1924, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Isabelle (Bakken) Gilbertson. She attended Decorah schools, graduating with the class of 1942. She went on to attend AIC Business College in Davenport, IA.

She was united in marriage to George Kruchek on June 16, 1961 in Decorah, IA.

Margaret worked for the National Weather Bureau in Davenport, IA for four years, and Kecker Produce in Ridgeway, IA. She served as Winneshiek County Auditor starting in 1961 and retiring on December 31, 1988. She was a volunteer for the Vesterheim Museum and was active in arranging her high school class reunions. She enjoyed reading and playing computer games.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her daughter, Sharon Elliott; two brothers: Vernon and Orin Gilbertson; and two sisters: Olive Hotvedt and Arline Edde.

Margaret is survived by her husband, George of Decorah, IA; two sons: David (Donna) Gilbert of Decorah, IA and Dennis Gilbert of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Shirley (Greg) Wright of Burr Oak, IA; nine grandchildren: Bradley Elliott, Brian Gilbert, Kimberly Gilbert, Dawn (Pat) Hoppe, Michelle (Scott) Saltou, Tyler Wright, Seth (Gina) Gilbert, Britta Gilbert, Hanna (David) Sloan; nine great-grandchildren: Caitlyn and Blake Hoppe, Hunter, Braydon, and Ashton Saltou, Matthew and Lexie Elliott, and Gretchen and Lydia Gilbert; two sisters: Inez Berge of Decorah, IA and Norma Rosendahl of Osage, IA; one brother, Robert (Charlene) Gilbertson of Decorah, IA; and by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Winneshiek County Cancer Society, First Lutheran Church of Decorah, IA or charity of choice.
