George J. Kruchek, age 84, of Decorah, IA, died Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 26, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors in the spring.
Visitation will be after 9:30 A.M. Thursday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.
George Joseph Kruchek was born on January 12, 1928 in Calmar, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Adella (Shimek) Kruchek. He was baptized at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. He attended St. Aloysius Catholic School in Calmar and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville, and then was confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. George served in the U.S. Army from May 26, 1955 to May 10, 1957 and was stationed in Germany.
He was united in marriage to Margaret L. Gilbertson on June 16, 1961 in Decorah, IA.
George farmed prior his marriage and then moved to Decorah and worked as a custodian at the West Side and East Side schools in Decorah, retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and V.F.W. George enjoyed cracking and selling black walnuts, gardening and fishing. He spent many evenings picking night crawlers, then sold them and became known as “wormy George”.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret on July 27, 2009; and one step-daughter, Sharon Elliot.
George is survived by two step-sons: David (Donna) Gilbert of Decorah, IA and Dennis (Michelle) Gilbert of Phoenix, AZ; one step-daughter, Shirley (Greg) Wright of Burr Oak, IA; nine step-grandchildren: Bradley Elliott, Brian Gilbert, Kim (fiancé, Josh Kuennen) Gilbert, Dawn Hoppe, Michelle (Scott) Saltou, Tyler Wright, Seth (Gina) Gilbert, Britta (Jeremy Mayer) Gilbert, Hanna (David) Sloan; eleven step-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Jerry (Arlene) Kruchek of Protivin, IA and Clarence (Diane) Kruchek of Alden, IA; and by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Aase Haugen Homes, St. Benedict Catholic Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
