Marie Peterson, age, 87, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Decorah, Iowa, died on Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Willow Garden Nursing Facility in Marion, Iowa, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 26, 2008, at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Douglas Mathison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will also be a Memorial Service 1:30 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the Lutheran Church of Resurrection, 3500 – 29th Avenue Marion, IA.

Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning.

Marie Irene Thompson Peterson was born on October 7, 1921, the daughter of John and Amelia (Blum) Thompson on the family farm near Decorah, Iowa. Marie was baptized and confirmed in her faith. Marie married Howard O. Peterson on June 11, 1940 at the Glenwood Lutheran Church parsonage. In the flood of 1941, the Upper Iowa River swept away their home and they lost nearly all of their possessions. When the family lived in Wisconsin, Marie worked at the Delafield Envelope Factory in Delafield, WI, and was active in the Delafield Lutheran Church, serving as president of the Ladies Mission Society and was active in the adult choir and ladies aide. When living in Cedar Rapids, she worked for Collins Radio for eleven years and was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and an active member until May 2008. Marie was also an active member of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church when in the Decorah area. Marie was a member of the Woman’s Bowling Association. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, canning, making lefsa, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, playing cards and above all, her family. Marie attended Milestones Adult Daycare in Marion, while she lived with her daughter Mariann. Marie’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Mercy Hospital in Marion for all of the special care that they gave Marie.

Marie’s survivors include her two daughters: Annette Berry & husband Allan, Alburnett, IA and Mariann Keith & husband Pardon, Marion, IA. Three sons: Leslie Peterson & wife Elaine, Decorah, IA; Harlan Peterson & wife Jan, Alburnett, IA and David Peterson, Alburnett, IA. Eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. One sister: Helen Rilling, Hillsboro OR. Two sisters-in-law: Lilly Brown, Peewaukee, WI and Esther Thompson, Decorah, IA. and several nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents: John and Amelia (Blum) Thompson. Her husband: Howard O. Peterson. Six brothers: Arnold, Raymond, Leonard, Nathan, Lester “Bud” and Bill Thompson.
