Leonard E. Sorenson, 86, of Decorah, died Thursday, May 25, 1995, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 30, at 2 p.m., at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church of rural Decorah, with the Rev. Joseph Lambert officiating. Alan Sensor was the organist. The congregation sang at the service.
Casket bearers were grandsons of Leonard Sorenson: Leslie Sorenson, Steve Sorenson, Harold Jacobson Jr., Terry Jacobson, Chad Benzing and Wayne Dostal. Burial was at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Cemetery. The French and Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Leonard Sorenson was born April 3, 1909, the oldest of six children of Lars and Ida (Lien) Sorenson of Winneshiek County. He was baptized at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church and later confirmed in his faith there March 23, 1924.
Leonard attended country school through eighth grade. On March 12, 1933, Leonard and Kate (Ann Katherine) Hotvedt were married at the Glenwood Lutheran parsonage. They became the parents of four sons and three daughters. Leonard was a construction worker.
Survivors include sons Lester and Elmer of Decorah, and Arnold and Dale of Thomasville, Colo.; daughters Arlene (Mrs. Duane) Larson, Edna (Mrs. Harold) Jacobson, and Marilyn (Mrs. Jay) Beard, all of Decorah; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edwin of Grants Pass, Ore., and Willard of Decorah; and a sister, Myrtle Philips of Decorah.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Kate, who died in 1984; a brother, Glen; and a sister, Selma Hotvedt.
