Alois (Louis) Kovarik, age 93, of Spillville died Friday October 22, 2010 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 11:00 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA, with Father Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 2010, at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. There will also be visitation at the funeral home after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Alois John Kovarik was born August 16, 1917, to Alois F. and Emma (Hospodarsky) Kovarik near Spillville, IA. Alois attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. Alois married Marcella Shimek on November 12, 1962 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Alois and Marcella farmed south of Spillville for many years, until they moved into town in 1989. In Alois’ younger years he was active in Sokol in Spillville. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, watching baseball and was an avid Cubs fan. He also enjoyed feeding the birds and especially enjoyed doing things with his family. He was a member of the FCLSA, St. Wenceslaus Holy Name Society, and the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Alois is survived his wife: Marcella, Spillville, IA, One son: Tom (Diane) Kovarik, Grayslake, IL. One daughter: Ruth Kovarik, Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Louis and Evelyn Kovarik. Niece and nephews: Mary Stika, Catoosa, OK; Larry Kovarik, Elma, IA; Wesley Kuboushek, Calmar, IA; and Leonard Kuboushek, Spillville, IA. Brother-in-law: Vic (Betty) Shimek, Rochester, MN.

Alois was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Rose (Jim) Kuboushek and Celia (Willis) Brady. One brother: Ed (Viola) Kovarik.
