Kostman, Delmar Francis 1936-2009

Delmar Kostman, age 72, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call on Monday, April 20, 2009, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be no other services.

Delmar Francis Kostman was born on November 22, 1936, the son of Paul and Dora (Cooper) Kostman in Post Township, near Ludlow, Iowa. Delmar attended country school and graduated from Postville High School in 1954. He served in the US Army in Germany. Delmar married Janet Gelo on November 14, 1961 in Caledonia, Minnesota. They farmed for one year and then Delmar worked construction throughout the Midwest, as well as in California, Texas, and Florida in nuclear, coal, and solar powered plants. Delmar then drove truck for Waste Management in Prairie Du Chein for seventeen years, retiring in 2003, as a result of a stroke. He entered Wellington Place over two years ago and recently had moved to Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Delmar enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, gambling and he especially loved his grandchildren. Delmar was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon.

Delmar’s survivors include his wife: Janet Kostman, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Joan (John) Zidlicky, Spillville, IA and Diane (Todd) Fossum, Stoughton, WI. Three sons: David Kostman, Decorah, IA; Jerry (Terri) Kostman, Houston, TX and Donald (Kim) Kostman, Scottsdale, AZ, along with sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Two sisters: Delores Howe, Bangor, WI and Caryl (Gary) Leiran, Frankville, IA.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents: Paul and Dora (Cooper) Kostman. Two children in infancy: Julie Marie and John Michael. One brother: Paul Kostman and Delmar’s faithful hunting companion, Windsor.
