Katherine M. Koshatka, age 89, of Spillville, Iowa, died on Friday, May 19, 2006, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, May 22, 2006 at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Monday morning.

Katherine M. Koshatka, age 89, of Spillville, Iowa, died on Friday, May 19, 2006, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness. Katherine Marjorie (Blaess) Kala Koshatka was born on September 23, 1916, the daughter of John H. and Minnie (Larson) Blaess in Decorah, Iowa. Katherine was baptized on November 4, 1916 by Rev. Ole Glesne and was confirmed on June 22, 1930, both at the Decorah Lutheran Church. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1933. She was a secretary for County Attorney, T. H. Carolan. Katherine married Joseph Kala on June 4, 1934. Together they operated the Kala Grocery Store and Meat Market in Spillville, for over thirty years. Joe died in 1964. She also worked at Bucheit Produce. Katherine married Jim Koshatka, of Protivin, on November 26, 1966 at Calmar Lutheran Church. Together they operated the Phillips 66 Station in Protivin. He died on December 12, 1989. Kay retired and moved to Spillville in 1992 and entered the nursing home in 2004. Katherine was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, and WELCA. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Katherine enjoyed doing things with her family.

Katherine’s survivors include two daughters: Margaret “Cookie” (Einer) Thompson, Calmar, IA and Virginia (Paul) Pavlovec, Calmar, IA. One son-in-law: Ronald Anderson, Lawler, IA. Ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. One sister-in-law: Marcella Kala, Spillville, IA.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents: John & Minnie Blaess; two husbands: Joseph Kala in 1964 and Jim Koshatka on Dec. 12, 1989; one daughter: JoAnne A. (Kala) Anderson on March 6, 1995; one son: Robert J. Kala on June 30, 1991; four sisters and two brothers.
