Dennis Keith Knutson, age 56, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at his home in rural Decorah after a ten year inspirational battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen, Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson. Burial will be in the Madison Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah.
Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
Today we celebrate the life of “Knute”.
Dennis, along with his wife Kim, whom he called his guardian angel, owned and operated the Decorah Sales Commission for 30 plus years. Dennis was an admired and respected cattleman throughout the Midwest and beyond. He lived and breathed the cattle business and all the friends he made along the way.
Dennis also enjoyed golfing, trail riding, John Deere equipment, vacationing and morning breakfasts at Burl’s. His greatest passion was food. Dennis loved cooking and baking for his friends and family. We will miss his lutefisk suppers that everyone had to attend. Reminiscing with Ottar and Irvin was one of the many repeated pleasures of his life. He loved to watch Iowa Hawkeye Football games and the Three Stooges.
Dennis Keith Knutson was born on February 6, 1950 in Ridgeway, Iowa, the son of Kenneth A. and Delores (Betts) Knutson. He was baptized March 5, 1950 and confirmed in 1965 at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. Dennis was crowned the State Champion at 95 lbs at the Iowa State Wrestling Championship in 1966. He was known as Decorah’s mightiest mite. He graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1968. Dennis served his country for six years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He was married to Diane Rustad and to this union, five children were born: Marty, Heather, Justin, Michelle and Michael. He later married Kim (Yarwood) Casterton.
Survivors include his wife, Kim of Ridgeway, Iowa; his children and their families, Marty (Juli) Knutson, Heather (Cory) Syverson, Justin Knutson, Michelle (Brandon) Stille, Michael Knutson, Justin Casterton and Kelly Casterton, all of Decorah, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Maratin Knutson, Arianna Knutson, Tanner Knutson, Isabella Knutson, Olivia Syverson, Grace Syverson, Cora Syverson, Ava Syverson and Brady Stille; his mother, Beverly Knutson of Ridgeway, Iowa; two brothers, Lester (Reyne) Knutson of Chatfield, MN and Tim (Tammy) Knutson of Ridgeway, IA; two sisters, Sheri (Jim) Akre of Winona, MN and Judy Fleshner of Decorah; two special uncles, Clair (Helen) Knutson of Ridgeway and Marlyn (Karen) Knutson of Decorah.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marcia Kay Knutson; two brothers, Gary Dean Knutson and Larry Beltz.
