Thelma A. Kjos, age 98, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility following a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday, October 14, 2006 at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa by Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, October 13, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

Thelma Alida Kjos was born on Good Friday, April 14, 1908 on the family farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Louise (Lunde) Kjos. She was baptized on May 17, 1908 and confirmed on June 3, 1923 at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa. She was educated in Winneshiek County Country Schools and earned an Adult Basic Education Certificate from Northeast Iowa Community College on June 29, 1998.

Thelma spent her life on the family farm helping in its operation and she devoted her life to being the caregiver for her family. She was a life long member of Madison Lutheran Church and was a member of the Madison Ladies Aid and church circle.

Thelma enjoyed living the farm life and was fond of gardening, planting and caring for large beds of flowers and caring for a variety of animals. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many quilts for members of her family. Thelma loved to share family history stories and was a wealth of knowledge. Up until her death, she had a wonderful memory and was able to remember past events in great detail.

She became a resident of Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah on December 12, 1994. Thelma died Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at the Care Facility following a brief illness at the age of 98 years.

Survivors include seven nieces, Ethel Tietje of Marshalltown, IA, Colleen (Maynard) Hovey of Cresco, IA, Jean (Jim) Morris of Bristow, IA, Janet (Joe) Frank of New Brighton, MN, Anna Mae Bergan Davis of Ridgeway, IA, Lois (Sherwin) Palmer of Cut Bank, MT, and Mary (Donald) Erdmann of Cut Bank, MT; four nephews, LaVerne (Lois) Bergan of Minneapolis, MN, Hubert (Dora) Kjose of Longview, WA, Ted (Betty) Kjose of Kelso, WA and Nordan (Lois) Kjos of Kelso, WA; numerous great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Christine Kjos, Norma Kjos and Mabel Bergan; two brothers, John and Lloyd Kjos; and two nephews, Marvin Bergan and Eldon Bergan.
