Gladys Kalec age, 94 of Decorah, IA formerly of Spillville, IA died Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the Aase Haugen Nursing home in Decorah, IA after a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA by Rev Donald Hawes burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be on Tuesday after 10:00 a.m. at the Church. Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA is in charge of arrangements

Gladys Lillian (Novotny) Kalec was born on December 8, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Wagner) Novotny, on a farm in Utica Township, north east of Lawler, Iowa. Gladys went to country school at Utica No. 7 and helped her parents on the farm. She belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Turkey, where she received her sacraments and was a member of the choir. On June 11, 1934, she married Joseph Kalec at St. Pius Catholic Church, Cherry Mound, near Harpers Ferry, IA. They moved to Spillville and joined St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Guild and the Legion of Mary. In 1935, they built the stone garage and service station out of a three-story building. In 1956, they sold the service station and home, to Francis and Adella Kuhn, and built a new home in the country on two acres. Joseph passed away on February 12, 1964. She had worked at the Haug Store for seven years and one summer at the Tlougan’s House of Clocks. After her husband’s death, she went to work for Frank and Esther Miller and their families, until 1992. In 1994, she moved to Decorah and helped where it was needed at churches and looked after ill people and took them to their appointments. She joined St. Benedict’s Catholic Church; St. Theresa’s Circle and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was thankful for her faith, which was the core of her existence. Her favorite hobbies included traveling the world with friends, dancing and fishing.

Gladys’ is survived by her nephew: Ronald (Blanche) Jirak, Protivin, IA. One niece: Joan (Dick) Gebel, Alta Vista, IA. Three great nieces: Diane Houdek, Sherri Achen, and Pam Gribben. Two great nephews: David Gebel and Ken Jirak, along with several cousins.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Mary (Wagner) Novotny. One brother: Clarence. Two sisters: Tillie Jirak and Adeline in infancy.
