The family moved to a farm near the Canoe Ridge Church in 1936, and in 1938 moved to a farm near Sattre. In 1945, the family relocated to a farm north of Locust.

Durwin married Marilyn Joyce Vine August 29, 1948 at the Decorah Methodist Church. Durwin and Marilyn farmed with Durwin’s parents on the Locust farm until March 1953. A dedicated and hardworking farmer until his late seventies, Durwin very reluctantly phased out his farming operation in 2000. He and Marilyn continued live on their farm in retirement. Marilyn died in 2004. In February 2005, Durwin sold his farm and moved to Decorah.
