Robert (Bob) Hjelmeland, 86, of Decorah, died March 12, 1992, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral services were March 16 at 10:30 a.m. st Decorah Lutheran Church, with Pastors James M. Glesne and John V. Halvorson officiating. Burial was at Springwater Cemetery. Pallbearers were Glen Barth, Alan Erickson, Harlan Erickson, and Bradley, Brian and Neil Hjelmeland.

Fjelstud Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Organist was Diane Kvamme. Deneice Stark sang "How Great Thou Art" and Lester Hjelmeland sang "Den Store Hvide Flok." The congregation sang "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Amazing Grace."

He was born Oct. 20, 1905, in Bergen, Norway,the son of Reinhardt and Oleanne (Groneng) Hjelmeland. He was baptized as Robert Konrad Hjelmeland in Norway.

He emigrated to America in 1909 at the age of 3, with his mother and sister, Kitty. His father had emigrated to America in 1907, and was employed at the lumber camps at Portland, Ore.

The Hjelmeland family made their home in Mason City until 1912 when they moved to Calmar. Mr. Hjelmeland was confirmed at Calmar Lutheran Church in 1921, and he attended Calmar public schools, graduating from Calmar High School in 1925.

He married the former Marian Woldum of Decorah at Freeport, Ill., in 1933. She and their infant son, David Robert Hjelmeland, died in Decorah during childbirth in 1933.

Robert married Edith Geneva Erickson Nov. 22, 1936, at the Decorah Lutheran parsonage, with the Rev. O. Glesne officiating. They made their home in Decorah with the exception of six years when they lived in the Springwater area of Canoe Township. He was a longtime employee of Bolson's Feed Company in Decorah, and had previously been employed for 20 years by the Decorah Produce Company. He retired in 1970.

The couple moved to the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in 1988. She died there July 2, 1991,at the age of 76. They had been married 54 years and were members of Decorah Lutheran Church. They were the parents of four sons, Harold Robert, Lester David, Norman Wayne and Carl Dean.

Mr. Hjelmeland became a resident of Aase Haugen Retirement Center in July, 1991, and died there March 12. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one sister, Mrs. Henry (Kitty) Flaskerud; a brother, Conrad Hjelmeland; and a grandson, Daryl Wayne Hjelmeland.

He is survived by his four sons and their wives, Harold and Linda Hjelmeland of Kokomo, Ind., Lester and Arla Hjelmeland of Winona, Minn., Norman and Patricia Hjelmeland of Des Moines and Carl and Linda Hjelmeland of Decorah; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law and their spouses, Chester and Elsie Erickson, Harold and Mary Erickson, Arthur and Evelyn Erickson, Grant and Vivian (Erickson) Barth and Leona (Erickson) Roher, all of Decorah, and Wallace and Margie Erickson of Shinnston, W.Va; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
