Edith G. Hjelmeland, 76, of Decorah, died July 2, 1991, at Oneota Riverview Care Facility.

Funeral services were July 6 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church, with Fjelstud Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Officiating were Pastors James M. Glesne and John V. Halvorson. Burial was at the Springwater Cemetery. Organist was Diane Kvamme, accompanying congreational singing. Hymns were "Holy, Holy, Holy," "How Great Thou Art" and "Were You There."

Pallbearers were Glen Barth, Alan Erickson, Harlan Erickson, Brian Hjelmeland, Neil Hjelmeland and Dale Roher.

She was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Canoe Township, the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Sorenson) Erickson. She attended Canoe Township and Pleasant Township school. She married Robert C. Hjelmeland Nov. 22, 1936, at Decorah Lutheran parsonage, with the Rev. O. Glesne officiating.

She had been employed by Decorah Produce Company and worked in the dietary department of Luther College. She was a lifelong resident of Winneshiek County, and was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah Lutheran Church Women, and the Springwater Ladies Aid.

She and her husband moved to Oneota Riverview Care Facility in 1988.

She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Hjelmeland; four children, Carl D Hjelmeland and his wife, Linda, of Decorah, Harold Hjelmeland and his wife, Linda, of Kokomo, Ind., Lester Hjelmeland and his wife, Arla, of Winona, and Norman Hjelmeland and his wife, Patricia, of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Chester Erickson and his wife, Elsie, Harold Erickson and his wife, Mary, and Arthur Erickson and his wife Evelyn, all of Decorah, and Wallace Erickson and his wife, Margie, of Shinnston, W. Va.; and two sisters, Vivian Barth and her husband, Grant, and Leona Roher, both of Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother (Merlan Erickson) and one grandson (Daryl Wayne Hjelmeland).

She was baptized at Decorah Lutheran Church where she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in 1929.
