M.S.Thompson Funeral is Held Sunday, Jan. 20th

Passed Away at Farm Home In Springwater Township, Wednesday.

Residents of Springwater township were shocked to hear of the death of Mathias S. Thompson at his home last Wednesday at 1:30 P.M. Mr. Thompson had been confined to his bed for six weeks and had been in poor health for several months. He was 82 years years old, living on his farm in Springwater township ever since he came to the United States from Norway in 1886.

Mathias S. Thompson was born in Toten, Norway, Aug. 11, 1853, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thompson. He attended school in Norway and when he was 20 years old, married Miss Letta Lien, April 12, 1873.

Thirteen years after their marriage they journeyed to the United States, locating in Winneshiek county. To this union 12 children were born, nine of whom survive. They are Thomas Thompson, Canoe township; Lewis Thompson, Glenwood township; Sarah (Mrs. Bert Sande), Springwater township; John Thompson, Glenwood township; Ole Thompson, Decorah; Helmer Thompson, Decorah, Ben Thompson, Decorah, and Miss Lillie Thompson, at home. The three children preceding him in death are Ben, Amelia, and Martin Thompson. Martin died in Decorah last April.

Mr. Thompson is also survived by his widow. No brothers are living. John Thompson and Ole Thompson preceding him in death several years ago.

He was a devout member of the Springwater Lutheran church from which the funeral was held last Sunday. Earlier services were held at the Ness funeral home in Decorah Sunday. The Rev. O. Glesne officiated. Burial was made in the adjoining Springwater cemetery.

A grand-daughter Mrs. Arnold Peters, a nephew, Manley Thompson, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Thompson of Caledonia, Minn., were present at the funeral.

Passed Away at Home in Springwater: He is Survived By Nine Children

The funeral of Mathias S. Thompson Stromstad, 81, was held at his home in Springwater, Sunday, Jan. 20, with further services from the Springwater church with the Rev. O. Glesne of Decorah officiating. Burial was in the Springwater cemetery.

Mathias S Thompson was born in Toten, Norway, August 11, 1853, coming directly to Winneshiek county, Oct. 27, 1885. In Norway he worked as a miller and also followed his trade here. He also worked at the mason business and carpenter trade.

Mr. Thompson lived most of his life at Springwater, Canoe township, with the exception of a few years at Freeport, Decorah, and near Sattre in Pleasant township.

He was married in Norway to Lisa Hanson Vigen, April 12 1874. To this union 12 children were born. Two sons, and one daughter preceded him in death. They are Milla (Mrs. Ed Goltz), Martin, who died last April and Ben, dying in infancy. The surviving children are Thomas, Sarah (Mrs. A.J. Sande), Lewis, John, Ole, Selmer, Benhart, Thorwald and Lilly, all living in the vicinity of Decorah.

His widow and 49 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive.

The casket bearers were Theodore Narveson, Narve Narveson, Otto Olsen, Andrew Jaastad, Oscar Erickson and Martin Ellingson.

Submitter's Comment: The first obituary states that Mr. Thompson married Miss Letta Lien on April 12 1873 and the other one states that he married Lisa Hanson Vigen on April 12 1874. I have a Thompson Family Tree printed by family members that states that he married Elizabeth (Lisa) Vegen. An article submitted by a family member for the Winneshiek County, Iowa Biographies - 1996 states that Mathias Thompson married Elizabeth Vegen.
