Evelyn L. Haugen, age 97, of Decorah, died Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 24, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen with inurnment in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 24, one hour before services, at First Lutheran Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.
Evelyn Lucille Haugen was born January 1, 1911, on the family farm in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the second child of Charlie N. and Eliza Beatha (Rustad) Nelson. She had seven sisters and one brother.
At the age of nine, Evelyn and her family moved to Nordness where her father was a partner in the general store. She attended Springfield School No. 6, graduating from 8th grade, and Decorah High School, graduating with the class of 1929.
Evelyn was united in marriage with Thomas E. Haugen on June 3, 1931 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Parsonage by Reverend Paul Koren. This union was blessed with five children: Donna, Thomas, twins Judith and Gerald, and David.
In June of 1944 the Haugens moved to Decorah. Evelyn was an excellent housekeeper and cook, and she enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She and her husband Thomas owned and operated the Scenic Cab Company in Decorah and also served together as ticket agents for Scenic Hawkeye Stages bus depot prior to their retirement.
Evelyn became a resident of Aase Haugen Assisted Living Apartments in October, 2004, and later the Aase Haugen Nursing Home on November 4, 2006.
She was preceded in death by husband Thomas on August 29, 1988; her parents; three sisters, Agnes Spilde, Gladys Hicken, and Clarice Gilbertson; and one brother Charles Nelson.
She is survived by her five children: Donna (Vernon) Bahr of Decorah, Iowa, Tom (Lola) Haugen of Decorah, Iowa, Judy (Grant) Nelson of Malibu, California, Jerry (Sally) Haugen of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and David (Joan) Haugen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 14 grandchildren: Steve, Jan, Michelle, Jackie, Todd, Kari, Mary, John, Rebekah, Eric, Leif, Dane, Cara, and Kyle; 15 great-grandchildren: Dane, Jon, Rick, Erica, Michael, Katie, Nate, Adam, Haley, Michael, Grant, Tait, Liv, Marit, and Chloe; and four sisters: Beatrice Paulson, Denver, Iowa, Marion Fritz, Roseville, Minnesota, Florence Lynch, Decorah, Iowa, and Darlyne Rugland, Kalispell, Montana.
