Alma V. Harvey, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Thomas Pietz and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 12:00 at the church on Friday.
Alma Verdie (Matter) Harvey was born on May 17, 1919, the daughter of John Alvin Luther and Emma Mae (Stoskopf) Matter. Alma was the eighth of eleven children and grew up on the family farm two miles north of Decorah in the area where her pioneer ancestors had settled. Alma was baptized on December 10, 1919, at the Locust Evangelical Methodist Church, rural Decorah, and confirmed on June 4, 1933, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Growing up, she worked at the home farm and at Matters Ballroom. Alma attended Clay Hill School in rural Decorah and graduated on June 2, 1933. She married Milo LaVern Harvey on March 19, 1939, in MacGregor, Iowa, at the home of Harry Harvey. During World War II, she lived in Madison, WI, moving back to Decorah in 1946. With Milo, she owned and operated Harvey’s Radio and TV from 1946-1993. From 1967-93, she worked with her son Gerald, at Harvey’s Hobby Hut, where she specialized in hand making silk flower arrangements for weddings. Alma was an avid golfer and enjoyed her bridge club, bowling, boating, needlepoint and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Alma’s survivors include her two sons: Gerald Harvey, Decorah, IA, and Dennis (Elaine) Bel Aire, KS. Six grandchildren: Donna (Kevin) Eberling, Postville, IA; Darrell Harvey, West Hollywood, CA; Brian (Linda) Harvey, Dyersville, IA; Timothy Harvey, Kansas City, MO; Debra (Patrick) Ary, Wichita, KS and Andrew Harvey, Falls Church, VA. Nine great grandchildren: Thomas (Amanda) Severson, Christopher, Michelle and Rachel Severson; Keona and Kiele Eberling; Madison and Ella Harvey and Evelyn Ary. Three sisters: Margaret Sorenson and Ethel Sensor, both of Decorah, IA, and Bernice (Spencer) Landswerk, Weslaco, TX. One brother-in-law: Leonard (Ethyle) Harvey, Milton, WI. One sister-in-law: Arlene Matter, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents: John Alvin Luther and Emma Mae (Stoskopf) Matter. Her husband: Milo on June 22, 2006. Five brothers: Leonard (Carol) Matter, Elmer (Ruth) Matter, Roger Matter, Walter (Hilda) Matter, and Willard Matter in infancy. Two sisters: Florence (John) Lansing and Hattie (Leonard) Keefe. Two brothers-in-law: Galen Sensor and Willard Sorenson. One nephew: Michael Harvey.
