Duane R. “Curly” Hartson, age 77, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at home in Decorah of cancer.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah by Matthew H. Perkins with burial at sea in San Diego, California with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, August 31, 2009 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Tuesday after 10:00 A.M. at the church.

Duane Ronald “Curly” Hartson was born on July 7, 1932 in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the son of Milton and Lorraine (Kist) Hartson. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1950.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 where he was an Electricians Mate. He served with the Submarine Fleet for most of his military career. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Duane retired from active duty in October of 1972 as an EM1(SS). He was a member of the Reserve Fleet from 1972 to 1982.

He was united in marriage to Gladys Emma Rolfs on May 25, 1957 in Waukegan, IL. This union was blessed with two children: Michael and Dianna.

After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he worked in maintenance at Hygrade in Postville, Iowa. In 1980 he moved to Waterloo, Iowa and was employed in the maintenance department at Allen Hospital. He retired in 1994, and in 1996 he moved to Decorah, IA. Duane enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He liked telling jokes, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Janice Halvorson, Phyllis Card, and Lois Wilson; and step-grandson Timothy Craner.

Duane is survived by his wife Gladys of Decorah, IA; son Michael (Sharon) Hartson of Postville, IA; daughter Dianna (Robert) Foster of Monmouth, IA; four grandchildren: Aaron (Maria) Hartson of Newton, IA, Cahleen Smith of Chicago, IL (and special friend Nate Feldmann of Evanston, IL), Evonne Smith of Fullerton, CA, and Noah Hartson (fiancée Sara Stortz) of Cedar Falls, IA; four step-grandchildren: James Craner of Oakhill, FL, Jessica Hauber of Spillville, IA, John (Danielle) Streets of Maquoketa, IA, and Justin Szabo of Postville, IA; five step-great grandchildren: Devin, Brianna, Dylan, and Derek Hauber and Prescott Streets; brother Eugene Hartson of Waterloo, IA; three sisters: LaVonne (Don) Franke of Evansdale, IA, Sharon Slater of Port Clinton, OH, and Carole (Kermit) Clarin of Stacy, MN; brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to an organization of the donor’s choice.
