Helen I. Haugen, age 91, of Decorah, IA, died Monday morning, August 22, 2011 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Helen Irene Haugen was born May 19, 1920 in Readstown, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bernard and Emily (Christianson) Jerman. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1937 and attended Luther College. She was united in marriage to her beloved Clayton S. Haugen, on May 6, 1941 in Bethany, Missouri.
Helen was an avid golfer and won championships at both Silvercrest and Oneota Golf Clubs. She was a Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader and spent many hours as a volunteer at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, First Lutheran Church and Aase Haugen Home. Helen enjoyed reading, tending to her flowers and she loved to play bridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clayton on January 18, 1996, her parents, and her brother Phillip Jerman.
Helen is survived by two sons: Jan (Sharon) Haugen of Ames, IA and Gary Haugen of Prairie du Chien, WI; one daughter Beth (Robert) Halverson of Urbandale, IA; five grandchildren: Christopher (Nanette) Haugen of Alexandria, MN, Erik (Lauri) Haugen of St. Charles, IL, Lori (Patrick) Hays of Houston, TX, Helen (Greg) Deuhs of Snohomish, WA, Sara (David) Whitehead of Monk Sherborne, England; nine great-grandchildren; and by one sister, Joanne (Wayne) Killand of Richland, WA.
At Helen’s request, a private family memorial will be held with inurnment at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Decorah Public Library or the Aase Haugen Home and sent to Fjelstul Funeral Home, 306 E. Water Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
