Grayce Halse, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, March 5, 2006 unexpectedly at her home.

Funeral Service will be Wednesday March 8, 2006 at 11:00 at the Decorah Lutheran Church by Rev. James Glesne and Rev. Allen Vik. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Iowa.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Schluter – Balik Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 10:00 at the church on Wednesday.

Grayce Eleanor Halvorson Halse was born December 10, 1924 in Decorah, Iowa. Her parents were Olvin Thedius and Beatrice (Bakken) Halvorson and she was the second oldest of five daughters. Grayce was baptized on January 4, 1925 at Madison Lutheran Parsonage. She was confirmed at Madison Lutheran Church on May 21, 1939. She graduated with the Class of 1942 from Decorah High School. Grayce worked in offices for ten years before committing her time to raising a family. She married Roger P. Halse at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on October 23, 1948. All five children were born in Cedar Rapids. After living 11 years of their married life in Cedar Rapids in 1958, they moved their family back to Decorah to the Halse family farm (now known as Seed Savers). Roger’s parents, Ralph and Maggie, moved off the farm into town at that time. After farming 15 years they moved into town. Grayce was a very dedicated member of Decorah Lutheran Church. She was very active in circle, Ladies Aid, Do-Day (quilting), 50 Plus, Vacation Bible School and the Kitchen Committee. Grayce was also a member of the Auxiliary of the Oneota Care Facility. Grayce enjoyed playing cards, garage sales, baking cookies for family & friends, having coffee at McDonalds, visiting friends and doting over her large family.

Grayce’s survivors include her husband, Roger Halse, Decorah, IA; five children: Gerald (Susan Laidlaw, fiancée), of Ridgeway, Barbara (Tim) Mueller of Decorah, Randall (Nancy) of Omaha, NE, Dennis (Jodi) of Decorah, and Becky (Mike) Behrens of Northfield, MN. Eleven grandchildren: Jennifer (Steve) Henry, John Halse, Heidi (Jay) Longnecker, Richard (Sara) Halse, Melissa (fiancée Kye Palmer) Halse, Shannon, Rachael, Michael and Michelle Halse, Christopher and Jayme Bennett. One great grandson, Trevor Longnecker. Nine step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren. Three sisters: Olive “Ossie” Wohlford, Decorah, IA; Leila Wallace, Edina, MN and Ramona Monroe, Breezy Point, MN.

Grayce was preceded in death by her parents: O.T. in April 1947 and Beatrice in May 1967; a baby brother who died in childbirth in Nov. 1933; and her older sister, Doris Mathews, of Richmond, CA, who died on Feb. 14, 2006.
