Wyman George (Slim) Halverson (age 90) of Decorah IA, formerly of the Boston, MA area, died Wednesday May 16 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a brief battle with cancer. He was born August 6, 1921 in Wallace, Nova Scotia, Canada to Walmar and Jeanette (Carver) Halverson.
He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1939 along with his older brother and served in Africa, Italy, and France until his discharge as Battalion Sergeant Major in England in 1945.
Wyman met and married Ellen Martha Rhead in London in 1945. They returned first to Nova Scotia then immigrated to the Boston, MA area. He worked for many years as a warehouse manager for an appliance distributor before retiring in 1983. He and Ellen enjoyed spending winters in Florida until her death in 2001. He enjoyed reading, walking, fishing, and playing cards, especially cribbage. He was a fierce and loyal friend and is remembered by many in Canada, Florida, and Boston as well as Decorah.
He was a member of the Decorah Congregational U.C.C., the Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge of Massachusetts, and volunteered extensively at Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation for which he received the Governor’s Volunteer Award.
He is survived by his son Richard (Dianne) of Decorah and granddaughter Heather of Bothell, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ellen, his siblings Roland, Laurance, Vimy, and Beatrice and his good and special friend Barbara Clark.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, June 1 at 11 A.M. at the Decorah Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Marlea Gilbert officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Decorah Congregational U.C.C., Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation or charity of choice.
