Rita Hackman, age 90, of Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa, after a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson, Iowa with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, from 3:00- 8:00 and after 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday morning. There will be a Forester’s memorial service and rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Rita Ruth (Leibold) Hackman was born May 25, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Dobrodinsky) Leibold near Ft. Atkinson, IA. Rita was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. John’s Catholic Church and attended St. John’s Catholic School. On September 10, 1940, Rita married Leo Hackman at St. John’s Catholic Church, and together they farmed near Fort Atkinson and raised their family. Rita enjoyed cooking, playing cards, crocheting, gardening, sewing, especially doing things with her family. She was a member of the Fort Atkinson Legion Auxiliary, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and St. John’s Guild.

Rita’s survivors are six sons: Ron (Rosemary) Hackman, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mel (Mary Lou) Hackman, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Jim (Chris) Hackman, Cresco, IA; John (Sue) Hackman, Ft. Atkinson, IA; David (Sharon) Hackman, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Rick (Donna) Hackman, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Six daughters: Madonna (Jerome) Kriener, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Betty (Leon) Benjegerdes, Manly, IA; Judy (Duane) Crock, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mary (Erich) Weiss, Decorah, IA; JoAnn (Pat) Costigan, Lawler, IA; Janet (Frank) Hron, Decorah, IA; Son-in-law: Marv and Gail Tester, Salt Lake City, UT. Thirty-five grandchildren: Rose (Kelly) Wander, Paul Kriener, Sharon (Duane) Elsbernd, Tom (Laurie) Kriener, Janice (Dale) McIntosh, Troy Benjegerdes, Joy (Erik) Garnass, Michael (Lisa) Hackman, Jason Hackman, Holly (Jason) Patterson, Brian Hackman, Andy Hackman, Craig (Cindy) Crock, Eric (Barb) Crock, Kari (Dirk) Sanders, Dan(Ardys) Weiss, Joel, Jenny & Jamie Hackman, Brad (Karen) Costigan, Tracy (Nathan) Krueger, Kyle (Abbi) Costigan, Kurt Costigan, Matt, Darin and Chelsea Hackman, Chad (Jessica) Hackman, Shannon (Aaron) Hurd, Dalton & Cody Hackman, Jill Luke & Neil Hackman, Karla (Jon) Kottke, and Kevin Hron. Rita was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Mary Leibold; her husband: Leo on March 14, 1984. One daughter: Lorraine Tester on August 15, 1987. Two grandchildren: Steven Hackman on January 27, 1970 and Mark Costigan on July 21, 2000. Two sisters: Adella Kipp and Evelyn Riha. Three brothers: Irvin, Edward, and Cletus Leibold.
