Robert “Bob” Grainger, age 74, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday, October 11, 2010, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 1:00 p.m., at the church on Tuesday afternoon.

Robert Russell Grainger, the son of Walter and Edna (Purcell) Grainger, was born on November 10, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan. Bob attended Lakeview High School, graduating in 1953, and William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was married to Myrna White and to this union two daughters were born: Vickie and Shelly. They later divorced. Bob married Phyllis Kadlec and together they had three children: Daniel, Devin & Allison. Bob owned and operated the Gulf Station on College Drive and then the Corner Bar for many years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, cooking and communicating with friends and family on the computer. Bob loved the many dogs who came into his life. He also loved listening to music, especially when performed by one of his children. Above all, Bob delighted in his children and was proud of each of them.

Bob is survived by his wife: Phyllis Grainger, Decorah, IA. Five children: Vickie Bruening, Decorah, IA; Michelle (Brian) Steffen, Des Moines, IA; twin sons: Daniel Grainger, Decorah, IA; Devin (fiancé, Sarah Jennings) Grainger, Cedar Falls, IA; and Allison Grainger, Decorah, IA; six grandchildren: Jocelyn Bruening, Ashley (Nikola) Gjorcevski, Tyler (friend, Tara Talbert) Bruening, Jacob Bruening, Morgan Steffen and Zachary Steffen; one great grandchild: Alayna Bruening; one sister: Donna Allen, South Carolina; one brother: Kenneth (Ann) Grainger, St. Clair Shores, MI. Mother-in-law: Jean Kadlec, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Paul (Leslie) Kadlec, Decorah, IA. One sister-in-law: Ann (Richard) Losee, Riceville, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Walter Grainger in 1996 and Edna (Purcell) Grainger in 1985, his father-in-law; Frank Kadlec, and his brother-in-law; John “Jack” Allen.
