Spencer D. Graves, age 82 of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday morning, April 3, 2012 at Wellington Place in Decorah from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. Saturday, one hour before services, at First United Methodist Church.
Spencer Duane Graves was born May 19, 1929 at home in rural Decorah, Iowa to Sylvan and Martha (Rosendahl) Graves, the middle son of three boys. He attended country school and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1948. While in high school he lived with his grandmother Jane Graves in Decorah, in order to be able to attend school and get his diploma.
He was united in marriage to Darlene Stendel on May 12, 1956 at the United Methodist Church in Castalia, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Randall and Nancy.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Freeport, then later the First United Methodist Church in Decorah.
Spencer was a dairy farmer, raised beef and grew crops. He farmed and raised his family on the Graves family homestead located in Glenwood Township.
In 2007 he became a resident of Wellington Place, first residing in the assisted living unit, then moving to the skilled care unit in April 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Leonard Sr. and Donald.
Spencer is survived by his wife Darlene; two children, Randall of Decorah and Nancy (Jeffrey) Cronin of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Nora and Phillip; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Graves and Sarah (David) Ottesen of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.
