Virgil Goettelman, age 92, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, September 7, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Carol Kress presiding. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa, with full military rites at the graveside by the Helof – Holm VFW Chapter #1977.
Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday evening.
Virgil Samuel Goettelman was born on January 25, 1917, the son of Charles and Mabel (Bolger) Goettelman on the family farm near Decorah, Iowa. Virgil attended rural Pleasant Township country school and helped on the family farm. He served in the US Army from January 8, 1942 to June 20, 1945, during World War II. Virgil married Rosella Ansten on June 6, 1948, at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Virgil worked for Bruening Rock Products for thirty two years. Virgil enjoyed camping and fishing. He was a lifetime member of the Helof – Holm VFW Chapter #1977 and the First United Methodist Church in Decorah.
Virgil’s survivors include his wife: Rosella Goettelman, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Sharon (Curt) Buhr, Boca Raton, FL and Eileen (Byron) Meyer, Postville, IA. Four grandchildren: Stacey Meyer, Bradley (fiance, Rachel Elgin) Meyer, Kristi (J.R.) Mundy and Scott Buhr. One great granddaughter: Nora Mundy. One sister: Emma Jane Severide, Cedar Rapids, IA, along with several nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents: Charles and Mabel (Borger) Goettelman. Two brothers: Floyd and Robert Goettelman.
