Frieda Goettelman, age 87, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Frieda Minnie (Huhe) Goettelman was born on October 29, 1920, the daughter of German immigrants, Fred and Eliza (Ackermeier) Huhe, Sr. on the family farm near Ridgeway, Iowa. Frieda attended rural country school and she worked helping neighbors, taking care of the elderly and newborn babies. Frieda married Robert Goettelman in October 1941, and to this union, three sons were born: Wayne, Dale and Gary. They farmed near Ridgeway from 1941- 43. In 1950, they purchased and ran the Spillville Locker until 1967. Frieda then worked for the Aase Haugen Nursing Home as a nurses aide until 1985. She also privately did in home care for a few years, after she retired. Frieda enjoyed playing cards, watching the birds, tending her flower gardens, doing needlework and quilting; making quilts for all her family members. She also was a wonderful cook and baker, making rosettes and bread, and sharing with all. Frieda also enjoyed keeping a diary for seventy years. Frieda was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church and ladies circle.
Frieda’s survivors include her two sons: Dale (Leanne) Goettelman, Spillville, IA and Gary (Debbie) Goettelman, Spring Valley, MN. Three grandchildren: Corey (Tina) Goettelman, Adam Goettelman and Cindy (Mike) Yslas. Four great grandchildren: Izzabella, Ashlie and Cheyenne Goettelman; and Kara Yslas.
Frieda was preceded in death by her parents. Her husband: Robert Goettelman in 1999. One son: Wayne in 1965. One sister in infancy: Elsa and four brothers: William, Fred, Jr., August and Paul.
