Rudolph “Rudy” Gerleman, age 93, of Calmar, IA, died on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 27, 2010, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville, Iowa
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon.
Rudolph “Rudy” Paul Gerleman was born on June 20, 1916, the son of Anton and Christine (Wiltgen) Gerleman on the farm near Calmar, Iowa. Rudy attended rural country school and then St. Francis – DeSales Catholic School in Ossian. After his schooling, he worked for area farmers. Rudy married Wilma Kuboushek on September 19, 1938, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. Together they farmed near Calmar on the family farm, where Rudy milked and loved his Holstein cattle. He retired in 1990. Rudy loved to watch the area town teams play baseball and to listen to the games on the radio. Rudy enjoyed music, dancing and reading. Rudy was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa.
Rudy is survived by his two sons: Roger (DiAnn) Gerleman, New Hampton, IA, and Clark (Joyce) Gerleman, Elizabeth, IL. Six grandchildren: Todd Gerleman, Troy Gerleman, Trisha (Rob) Hall, Kelli (Dave) Swisher, Warren Gerleman and Grant Gerleman. Nine great grandchildren: Alex & Madeline Gerleman; Taylor Whalen; Isabella & Ava Hall; Amanda, Austin & Adam Swisher; and Garrett Gerleman. Rudy’s special friend: Ella Anderson, Decorah, IA One sister: Philomenia Lis, Cedar Rapids, IA; Three sisters-in-law: Mary Kay Gerleman, Cedar Rapids, IA; Christine (Herb) Rausch, Fort Atkinson, IA; and Laura Kuboushek, Calmar, IA. One brother-in-law: Ted Schmitt, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Rudy was preceded in death by his parents: Anton and Christine (Wiltgen) Gerleman. His wife: Wilma Gerleman on July 24, 1985. One granddaughter-in-law: Amy Gerleman in 1997. Four brothers: Albert (Katie) Gerleman, Leo (Laura) Gerleman, Andrew (Mabel) Gerleman, and Gus (Inez) Gerleman. Two sisters: Rose (Herb) Rothmeyer and Genevieve (Frank) Rothmeyer. Three brothers-in-law: Raymond (Dolores) Kuboushek, Robert Kuboushek and Ed Lis. Three sisters-in-law: Mildred (Ed) Silhacek, Viola (Fritz) Meyer and Marcella Schmitt.
