Virgil Gerleman, age 76, of Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday, March 16, 2007, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2007, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa, with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the St. Luke’s Historical Chapel in St. Lucas, Iowa. Friends may also call on Monday morning until time of services at the church. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Virgil William Gerleman was born on October 28, 1930, the son of Aloysius and Rose Marie (Tillman) Gerleman near St. Lucas, Iowa. Virgil attended St. Luke’s Catholic School. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from June 10, 1952 to May 12, 1954. Virgil married Grace Ann Lensing on May 1, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton, Iowa. Virgil farmed his entire life near St. Lucas and worked the farm that he was born on. He loved farming, driving tractor and looked forward to his favorite season every year which was Spring. He enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, visiting with family and friends, his dog, Buster; but most of all he treasured and loved his family and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

Virgil’s survivors include his wife, Grace Gerleman, Ft. Atkinson, IA. One son: Glenn Gerleman, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Three daughters: Janice (William) Holthaus, Calmar, IA; Darlene (James) Koenig, Byron, MN and Kathleen (Guy) Gregerson, La Crosse, WI. Seven grandchildren: Lynnette (Dale) Kruse, Laurie (fiancé Scott Kluver)Holthaus, Allison (special friend, Eli Phillips) Holthaus, Mitchell Holthaus, Joseph Koenig, Dawn Koenig and Danielle Koenig. One brother: Florian “Jimmy” (Marlys) Gerleman, Charles City, IA. One sister: Agnes Galligan, Lawler, IA.

Virgil was preceded in death by his father and mother: Aloysius and Rose Gerleman; his father and mother-in-law: George and Catherine Lensing. Four brothers: Father Laverne Gerleman, Hugo Gerleman, Matthew Gerleman and Edmund Gerleman. One sister: Thecla Lechtenberg. Four brothers-in-law: Eugene Lensing, Elmer Marpe, Lawrence Lechtenberg and Paul Galligan. Two sisters-in-law: Mary Beckley and Rosemary Gerleman. One nephew: Gerard Orthaus.
