Leander “Lenny” Einck, age 78, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Monday, November 3, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and until 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at the funeral home.

Leander Hugo “Lenny” Einck was born on November 27, 1929, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Huinker) Einck on the family farm near Festina, Iowa. Lenny attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina and farmed with his family. He served during the Korean Conflict in the US Navy. Lenny married Adela Hageman on August 3, 1954, at Fort Lee, Norfolk, Virginia. After the service, Lenny returned and farmed east of Festina for many years, until he retired and moved into Calmar in 1991. Lenny kept busy and helped farm for the Kuboushek’s near Calmar. At the age of 76, he received his High School GED, which was a proud day for him. Lenny enjoyed woodworking, making toys, farm toys and even made a replica of the church of Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina. Lenny collected and enjoyed John Deere tractors. Above all, Lenny was a huge #3 Dale Earnhardt fan, where he collected Earnhardt memorabilia and enjoyed NASCAR racing. Lenny was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Halverson-Giesen America Legion Post #266 and the Turkey River VFW Post #3902. While farming, Lenny served on the AMPI Board.

Lenny’s survivors include his two daughters: Maryern Einck, Calmar, IA and Leann (Dean) Huinker, Festina, IA. One daughter-in-law: Diana (Pat) Gardner, Cedar Rapids, IA. Six grandchildren: Danielle Dotzenrod, Aimee Dotzenrod, Brook Einck, Ryan Huinker, Tina Gardner and Eric Gardner. Two great grandchildren: Jaymes Dotzenrod and Kelsey Einck. Special Friend: Alvina Hemesath Murray, Calmar, IA. One brother: Leo “Pat” (Bernice) Einck, Waterloo, IA. One sister: Lorraine (Hugo) Schrandt, Festina, IA. One brother-in-law: Dale Ott, Festina, IA and three sisters-in-law: Frieda Einck, Decorah, IA; Rita Lou Einck, Waterloo, IA; Deanna Einck, Hugo, MN, along with many nieces and nephews.

Lenny was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Catherine (Huinker) Einck. His wife: Adela Einck on Dec. 15, 1997. One son: Pat Einck on March 30, 1980. Two grandchildren: Krista Huinker on April 21, 2000 and Jesse Einck on Oct. 22, 2003. Two sisters: Helen Ott and Rose (Loren) Nathan. Four brothers: Edward (Irene) Einck, Herbert, Jerome and LeRoy Einck. One brother-in-law: Ernest (Anna Mae) Hageman.
