Emma Eide, age 98, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, July 27, 2009, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2009, in the Fellowship Room at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Pietz and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Fellowship Room at the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Emma Amanda (Knudsvig) Eide was born on September 16, 1910, the daughter of Severt and Anna (Mork) Knudsvig near Eldorado, Iowa, in Fayette County. Emma attended rural country school in Fayette County, high school in Cedar Rapids and received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University in Fayette at the age of seventeen. Emma taught in Fayette County for three years and then at a school east of Castalia on Hwy 52 until 1932. She married Obert Eide on February 27, 1932, at Stavanger Lutheran Church, Ossian, Iowa. Together they farmed near Castalia and Clermont. In 1950, they moved to Decorah, and Emma worked at Luther College, Grahams, Ben Franklin, Sears Catalog, and Wapsie Produce. At the age of 55, she went back to school at NICC and worked there for several years. Emma always kept busy, taking up bowling at the age of 70! Emma enjoyed quilting, crocheting and taking care of others. She also loved to read and was a great storyteller. Emma entered Wellington Place in September 2005. Emma was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Emma’s survivors include her two daughters: Doris Eide, Rochester, MN and Karen (Mike) Donahey, Marshalltown, IA. Two sons: Ken Eide, Decorah, IA and Duane (Deb) Eide, Spring Green, WI. Ten grandchildren: Beth (Gordon) Bird, Judy (Brad) Knowler, Greg (Beth) Eide, Keith (Mimi) Eide, Joshua and Emily Eide, Elisabeth and Annalisa Donahey, Addie and Spencer (Sara) Eide. Six great grandchildren: Brian & Lindsay Bird, Jamie & Lindsey Knowler and Gabriel & McKinley Eide. One great-great granddaughter: Maleigha Knowler, along with many nieces and nephews.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents: Severt and Anna (Mork) Knudsvig. Her husband: Obert Eide on Feb. 13, 1963. Two sons: Gordon Eide in 1998 and LaVerne Eide in 1955. One sister: Agnes Knudsvig. Eight brothers: Art, Pete, Rueben, Joseph, Otto, Elmer, Herman and Henry Knudsvig.
