Jean M. Cary, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died Monday morning, December 27, 2010 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 31, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah in the spring of 2011.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 30 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Friday one hour before the service at the church.
Jean Marie (Frey) Cary was born October 20, 1922 in Spillville, Iowa, the daughter of Walter D. and Mary E. (Suchan) Frey. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. She was a graduate of Decorah High School with the class of 1939. She worked as a stenographer in Washington D.C. during World War II, then came back to Decorah and worked at the A&J Agency.
Jean was united in marriage to Lyle V. Cary on July 17, 1950 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. To this union four children were born: Lyle Jr., William, Mary and Cindy.
Jean loved her family. She loved to cook and to entertain for birthdays, holidays and parties. She was an avid reader and an avid writer. She loved sending out cards and receiving cards. She and Lyle liked to travel and she enjoyed fishing trips up to Canada. They also had a cabin on the Mississippi River. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church where she was very active in women’s circles. Jean was a very religious and faithful person. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Decorah Elks Lodge and Silvercrest Golf & Country Club.
Jean has been a resident of the Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home for several years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, on April 17, 2004; her parents; and two sisters: Kathryn Berggren and Marian Eickhoff.
Jean is survived by her four children: Lyle V. Jr. (Marybeth) Cary of Decorah, William E. (Yvonne) Cary of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mary E. Cary of La Crosse, WI and Cindy J. Cary of Madison, WI; five grandchildren: Ann Cary (Kelly Fisher) of Portland, OR, Kristine (Brad) Archer of Houston, TX, Paul B. Cary of Chicago, IL, Dustin Cary and Michael Cary of Decorah, two great-granddaughters: Trinity and Ava Archer; and by one sister, JoAnn Frey of Redwood City, CA.
