Curtis H. Carpenter, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday morning, July 10, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA, following a stroke he had the previous weekend. Curt and Gloria were in Des Moines that weekend celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary with their whole family.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 15, 2010 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Jefferson officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 14 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Thursday one hour before the service at the church.

Curtis Herbert Carpenter was born November 7, 1921, the son of Oscar and Hazel (Eddy) Carpenter on the family farm in Elysian, MN. He graduated from Waseca High School with the class of 1939.

Curt was united in marriage to Gloria Wohlhuter on June 18, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, MN. This union was blessed with two children: Susan and Mark.

In October 1943, Curt started working for Interstate Power Co. in Albert Lea, MN. In October 1955, he was transferred to the Decorah office and became the District Auditor here. He retired from Interstate in October 1986 after 43 years of service.

He was a very active member of First Lutheran Church for 55 years, including serving as Vice President and President of the congregation, Board of Deacons, Secretary/Treasurer of the Men’s group, sang in the choir for 42 years, Sunday school teacher, Search Bible study, counted church offering, and helped assemble the monthly newsletter. He was also very active in the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club for 45 years, Luren Singing Society for 42 years, Quarterback Club, and served on the boards of Aase Haugen Home and Lutheran Cemetery. He also volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels and visit people at the Barthell Eastern Star Home. His hobbies included traveling, which he loved to do and this included three trips to Norway with the Luren Singers, he liked to golf at Silvercrest G. & C.C., follow baseball and football at both Decorah High School and Luther College, and loved to fish, enjoying trips up north to open walleye season.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Alta Krause, step-father, two step-brothers and a step-sister.

Curt is survived by his wife Gloria; one daughter, Susan (Rev. Mark) Miller of Papillion, NE; one son, Mark (Kelli) Carpenter of Clive, IA; and five grandchildren: Jennifer (Desi) Jimenez, Brian Miller and Kayla, Rachel and Cole Carpenter.

Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church or Decorah Community Free Medical Clinic, both at 604 W. Broadway, Decorah, IA 52101.
