Donna M. Brockmeyer, age 78, of Calmar, Iowa, died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a brief illness.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 24, 2007 at Calmar Lutheran Church by Rev. Norman Bauer, with inurnment in West Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 A.M. Monday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

Donna Mae Brockmeyer was born July 31, 1929 on the family farm near Eldorado, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mildred (Osmundson) Pape. She was baptized on August 18, 1929 by Rev. J.G. Oltman and confirmed in 1943 by Rev. William A. Foege at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. She graduated from West Union High School with the Class of 1947.

She married Dwaine Arthur “Bud” Brockmeyer on July 22, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. This union was blessed with three children: Denise, Candace and Alan.

Following their marriage, Bud and Donna made their home in New Jersey while Bud served in the U.S. Air Force. It was while living in New Jersey that their two daughters, Denise and Candace were born. The family returned to West Union, Iowa in 1955, later moving to Postville and then Calmar.

Donna worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in West Union for several years. She also served as the secretary at Calmar Lutheran Church and worked for a number of years at the Calmar Courier Newspaper.

She was a very active member of Calmar Lutheran Church and served her congregation in many ways including membership in WELCA, as a Luther League Sponsor, and as a member of the church council. She loved to spend time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Donna enjoyed fishing at Harper’s Ferry and Up North. She loved the outdoors and liked watching birds and other wildlife at her new home. Donna was an avid Hawkeye Basketball fan who enjoyed good dark chocolate and traveling. She was known for her baking, especially Norwegian delicacies and homemade donuts.

Survivors include her three children, Denise (Michael) Halse of Postville, IA, Candace Brockmeyer (Gerald Welsh) of Elkader, IA and Alan (Lisa) Brockmeyer of Calmar, IA; two grandsons, Brandon Wiebke of Las Vegas, NV and Aaron Wiebke (Ann Bordwell) of Cedar Rapids, IA; a great granddaughter, Paige Wiebke; three step grandchildren, Jacob Frana of Calmar, IA, Kyle Halse of Waukon, IA and Kristen Halse of Des Moines, IA; one sister, Kathleen Traeger of Hawkeye, IA; two brothers, Donald (Kay) Pape of Sun City, AZ and Daryl (Marilyn) Pape of Hawkeye, IA; a brother-in-law, Herbert Vagts of West Union and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud on December 15, 1987; a sister, Jeanette Vagts; a brother, Howard Pape; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Neil and LaVon Cooney and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Traeger.
