Marcellus Broghamer, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, May 25, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, at 307 West Main St. in Decorah, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a CDA rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Marcellus “Marcy” Wilmer Broghamer was born on October 13, 1922, the son of Edward and Agnes (Bergan) Broghamer in Minneapolis, MN. His family moved to Decorah as an infant. When his father died he moved into his grandparent’s home with his mother and brother Brogy. Marcy attended Decorah Community Schools. When Marcy was ten years old, he purchased his first registered Holstein heifer as a 4-H project and began developing the Broghamer Holstein Farm “Home of the Winneshieks”. Marcy was united in marriage to Marie Courtney on February 25, 1952, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton, Iowa and to this union, five children were born: Kathy, Marsha, David, Lisa and Tearza. Together they purchased their farm in 1959, with David becoming a partner in 1975. Marcy was fortunate to earn his living while enjoying his passion for developing and showing registered Holstein cattle. Marcy was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. He served as president, vice-president and director of the Iowa Holstein Association and was an active member at the county and district levels. He represented Iowa twelve times at the National Holstein Convention. He served as president of the Tri-State Breeders Cooperative and on the FHA Committee. He served on the board for Winn. Co. DHIA, Winn. Co. Dairy Council, Winn. Co. Farm Bureau, Winneshiek Co. Fair and Extension Council, along with the Winn. Co. Board of Review. He served as a 4-H leader for many years. Marcy also enjoyed being part of the Quarterback Club and was a football season ticket holder at the University of Iowa, until he was 80 years old. Marcy was the recipient of the Iowa Holstein Association Distinguished Service Award, Iowa Holstein Hall of Fame Award, Iowa Distinguished Dairyman Award, Pioneer Dairyman Award and the Iowa Holstein Master Breeder Award. Above all, Marcy especially loved his family and friends, Holstein cattle and sports.

Marcy is survived by his wife: Marie Broghamer, Decorah, IA. Four children: Kathy (Mike) Nash, Ft. Dodge, IA; Marsha (Pete) Carlson, Minneapolis, MN; Dave (Brenda) Broghamer, Decorah, IA and Lisa Drow, Decorah, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Courtney, Conley and Kelly Nash; Jacob, Luke and Max Carlson; Brigit (Brent) Storhoff, Jared (fiancé Sarah Schluter) Broghamer, Kristy (Kyle) Tarwater; Jeremy, Joy and Jonathan Drow. Three great grandchildren: Brynn, Claire Storhoff and Kaden Tarwater. One sister-in-law: Gerry Broghamer, Decorah, IA. One niece: Mary Hansen and two nephews: Billy and Scott Broghamer. Marie’s family: Marge (Mahlon) Carlsten, Moline, IL, Evie (Tom) Andresen, Cresco, IA, Vincent (Delores) Courtney, Omaha, NE, Louis Nichols, Omaha, NE, Louis (Pat) Courtney, Ridgeway, IA, Elaine (Nate) Drummond, Houston, TX and Elaine Halse, Decorah, IA, along with many niece, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Marcy was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Agnes Broghamer. Daughter: Tearza Broghamer on May 11, 1984. Son-in-law: Gregg Drow on September 16, 2003. Brother: Morand Broghamer on January 29, 2007. Four brothers-in-law: Frank Courtney, Gerald Courtney, Stephen Courtney and Norman Nichols. One sister-in-law: Audrey Courtney.
