Elmarie Bouska, age 88, of Protivin, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 29, 2011, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, Iowa, with Rev. Nick March presiding.

Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, IA. There will be a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Elmarie E. Bouska, daughter of Edward F. Novak and Regina Huber Novak was born October 8, 1922 on her family farm located north of Protivin, in Howard County, Iowa. Elmarie attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin. Elmarie married Edward Bouska on February 24, 1941. Together they farmed and brought into the world seven children; Jack, Mary Jane, Sally, Ann, Margaret (Peg), Allan and Carol. Edward and Elmarie shared 68 happy years together on their farm in Jackson Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Besides being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Elmarie welcomed friends and visitors from all over the world into her home, with her culinary skills and listening ear. Elmarie was a community leader in 4H, Country Road Players Community Theater, Winneshiek Co. Mental Health Association, TOPS, Jackson Homemakers and several church groups. Together, Elmarie and Ed counseled couples in how to have a happy marriage. They also assisted people in facing death and were leaders in the faith community. Elmarie taught community education classes in The Art of Bread Baking. She self-published a book by the same name as well as a book of stories about her childhood called “The Joys of a Simple Life”. Elmarie loved music, especially jazz. She loved to cook, entertain, travel, spend time with her family and garden. Her husband, Ed made her a greenhouse that she enjoyed every spring. Elmarie lived on the farm with loving assistance of caregivers as her cancer progressed. She accepted life on life’s terms and faced challenges with grace and dignity. She died in her home surrounded by her loving family on August 25th. Per her request, Elmarie’s body was donated to Mayo Clinic for medical education.

In lieu of flowers, Elmarie requested memorials be given to Winneshiek County Hospice, 901 Montgomery St. Decorah, IA 52101 or Catholic Charities of Dubuque, 1229 Mt. Loretta Ave, Dubuque, IA 52003.

Elmarie is survived by five of her children: Jack & wife June Bouska, Lawrenceville, GA; Sally & husband Tom McCoy, Edgerton, WI; Ann Novak & husband Larry Hartford, Burlington, WA; Margaret (Peg) Bouska, Iowa City, IA; and Carol Bouska & husband Jeremy Iggers, Minneapolis, MN. Grandchildren include: Les Bouska & Lynn Wayne & husband Greg (Jack & June Bouska), Tess Bouska & friend, Alejandro Castelli (Mary Jane Bouska), Kate McCoy & husband Rob Young, Mary & Jen McCoy & friend, Derek Apel (Sally & Tom McCoy). Bret Taggart (Ann Novak), Micha Reiter (Carol & Jeremy). There are six great-grandchildren: Matthew, Ryan & Kristina Bouska (Paul Bouska) Shannon & Nicholas Wayne (Lynn Wayne) and Owen McCoy Young (Kate McCoy).

Elmarie was preceded in death by her siblings Ernie and Lloyd Novak and Olivette Novak Rock, her husband Edward, her children Mary Jane and Allan, her grandchildren Paul and Sara and great grandchild Connor.
