Anthony “Tony” J. Bowlus, age 99 of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah following a long illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 24, 2006 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen, with burial in Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa. Pallbearers will be Rick Allyn, Michael Bowlus, David Hall, Roger Huinker, Craig Tuecke and Edward Tuecke. Friends may call from 3:00-5:00 P.M. Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a Masonic Memorial Service at 4:30 P.M. Sunday. Friends may also call after 9:30 A.M. Monday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Anthony John Bowlus was born October 5, 1906 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Fredericka and Ada (Barnett) Bowlus. He graduated from High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was united in marraige to Bernice L. Tuecke on September 29, 1932 at Pioneer Rock Church in Ceres, Clayton County, Iowa. To this union, two children were born: Kay and Nick.
Tony owned and operated a Hardware store in Arlington, Iowa and moved to Decorah in 1949 to operate a second hardware store. At age 55, Tony enrolled in LaJames College of Cosmetology in Mason City. Following his graduation, he worked with Bernice at the Parkway Beauty Shop in Decorah. He also taught cosmetology at in Calmar at the former Technical college.
Tony was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah; a member of Decorah Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge. He was actively involved in the original Nordic Fest and many others. Tony enjoyed art, painting and rosemalling. He was fond of traveling, collecting rocks and working in his rock shop. Tony liked to spend time outdoors and enjoyed trout fishing.
Survivors include a son, Nick (Pat) Bowlus of Oronoco, Minnesota; three grandsons, David Hall of Virginia Beach, VA., Mark (Dawn) Hall of Dalton, Massachusetts, and Michael (Angela) Bowlus of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Nathan Caleb, and Blake Hall, Sofi and Sara Bowlus; and a son-in-law, Victor Franklin of Mt. Sidney, Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kay Franklin on May 8, 2000; his wife, Bernice on May 2, 2002; and a brother, Russell Bowlus.
