Merle M. Anderson, age 95, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, IA following a long illness.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA by Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson. Inurnment is in Lincoln Cemetery, rural Ridgeway with full military honors.

Friends may call beginning at 12 noon at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 10, 2007. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.

Merle Melvin Anderson was born March 6, 1912 in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, IA, the son of Annette "Nettie" Helgeson and Albert Anderson. He was baptized on May 14, 1914 at Lincoln Lutheran Church and confirmed there on May 29, 1927. Merle attended rural schools.

Merle served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. Merle worked planting walnut trees with John Daubendiek, was the groundskeeper for Area One in Calmar for many years and worked for the telephone company. Merle also farmed the family farm and he and his mother mowed for years at Lincoln Lutheran Church and Cemetery. Merle was also the janitor at the church and hauled coal from town to the church.

Merle had a good sense of humor. He enjoyed working with engines and being a mechanic. He was interested in the community and in his friends and neighbors.

Merle was a resident of Howard County Residential Facility and then moved into Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. He enjoyed all the activities of the home and all the employees there. He also liked playing bingo and other games.

He was preceded in death by his mother on December 3, 1960.

There are no immediate survivors.
