Gail J. Alm, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 1, 2007 at St. Benedict Catholic Church by Rev. Phil Gibbs with inurnment in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.
Gail June Alm was born June 24, 1920 in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa the daughter of Daniel and Tina (Invick) Horan. Gail attended Decorah Schools and went on to work in local restaurants.
She was united in marriage to James G. “Jim” Alm on September 6, 1938 in St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with three children: James, Robert and Debora.
They lived in Washington, Decorah, Oelwein and Dubuque, Iowa before settling in Decorah. Gail helped Jim operate Alm’s Standard on the corner of Broadway and Washington Streets. They owned and operated the station for over 35 years until retiring and selling it to Donnie Johnson in 1983.
Gail was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah; Silvercrest Golf Club, where she was the club champion and Oneota Golf and Country Club. She was also the Decorah City Champion.
Survivors include two sons, James and his wife Martha Alm of Pine Island, MN and Robert and his wife Yvonne Alm of Lyons, CO; a daughter, Debora and her husband Bill Hoffman of Naperville, IL; eight grandchildren, Timothy, Christine, Nathan, Andrew, Ellie, Nikki, Katie and Rachel and four great grandchildren, Lilly, Abel, Hope and David.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim on May 14, 2007; her parents, six sisters, Lucille Onsager, Viola Gilbertson, Deloris Kroupa, Iola Groff, Sally Ganrud and a sister in infancy Conda Dinger, and two brothers, Donald and Thomas Horan.
