Opal C. Allen, age 84, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, February 26, 2007 at her home after a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 1, 2007 at First Lutheran Church by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen and Rev. H.G. Engebretsen. Spring Burial will be held at Bloomfield Cemetery in Castalia, IA

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a V.F.W. Auxiliary Memorial Service held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday. Friends may also call after 10 A.M. Thursday at the church.

Opal Cecile Allen was born August 31, 1922 in Ulysses, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank and Gurena (Hegland) Jones. She was baptized on December 29, 1922 and later confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. Opal graduated from Ossian High School with the Class of 1940 and then attended Pitze’s Beauty School in Waterloo, Iowa. She was a member of the Ossian Girls’ Basketball Team that qualified for the state high school tournament.

She was united in marriage with Robert W. Allen on November 8, 1942 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This union was blessed with four children: Cheryl, Dianne, Lynne and Randall.

Opal worked as a cosmetologist for many years at Ann’s Beauty Shop in Decorah and later at Aase Hagen Home. She was a faithful, dedicated member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah and the church circle. She was a longtime member and past President of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Decorah.

Opal was very family oriented and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She kept in touch with extended relatives and eagerly attended many family reunions. She had a terrific bunch of first cousins in Nebraska and she kept in close contact with them all. Opal loved the outdoors. She enjoyed all types of animals, including birds, cats, and dogs. She was fond of camping with her family along the Mississippi River near Lansing and rides on a homemade pontoon boat called the “Podunk”. Opal also enjoyed numerous tubing trips down the Upper Iowa River.

Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl R. Allen of Madison, WI, Dianne M. Allen of Decorah, IA, Lynne J. Meyer and her husband Bruce of Decorah; a son, Randall W. Allen and wife Penny of Decorah; five grandchildren, Tami (Andrew) Claybaugh, Dawn (Travis) Hughes, Benjamin Allen Meyer, Reed Allen and Jillian Allen; three great grandchildren, Mackenzie L. Hughes, Allison Hope Claybaugh and Kyle Robert Claybaugh; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard “Ann” Allen of Moline, IL. and a special friend, Jo Winkie of Decorah.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert on August 20, 1973; an infant granddaughter, Susie Rae Meyer and her brother and sister-in-law, Blaine and Grace Jones.
