James G. Alm, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, May 14, 2007 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah by Rev. Gary F. Krapfl with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

James Gillis “Jim” Alm was born March 11, 1918 in Miles City, Montana, the son of Loyal and Mary Elizabeth (Allen) Alm. As a young child, Jim moved with his family to Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1935 and attended Luther College for one year.

He was united in marriage with Gail June Horan on September 6, 1938 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with three children: James, Robert and Debbie.

Jim worked for a time at a local shoe store in Decorah and later moved to Washington, Iowa. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps. Following his war service, Jim sold shoes in Decorah, Oelwein and Dubuque. Jim and Gail then returned to Decorah where he worked as office manager of Midland Radio and also at Larsen Clothiers. Jim later bought the Standard Service Station on the corner of Washington and Broadway. He owned and operated the station for 35 years, until retiring and selling it to Donnie Johnson in 1983.

Jim was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Elk’s Lodge, Oneota Golf and Country Club and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163. He and Gail enjoyed golfing and playing bridge.

Jim became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Home on July 6, 2006.

Survivors include his wife of over 68 years, Gail, of Decorah; two sons, James and his wife Martha Alm of Pine Island, MN and Robert and his wife Yvonne Alm of Lyons, CO; a daughter, Debra and her husband Bill Hoffman of Naperville, IL; eight grandchildren, Timothy, Christine, Nathan, Andrew, Ellie, Nikki, Katie and Rachel and four great grandchildren, Lilly, Abel, Hope and David.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Virginia Book.
