Roald was born July 24, 1924 on the family farm in Highland Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Thomas and Caroline (Haukedahl) Selness. He attended Grendeland School and graduated from the Spring Grove High School. In 1949 he married LaVonne Skaaren. They lived on the farm until 1975 when they moved to Mabel. He farmed his whole life, and much of it with his nephew, Bert. Roald enjoyed working in the woods and going on fishing trips with friends. He loved league bowling and tournaments. He was a lifetime member of the Highland Lutheran Church.

Roald passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 of natural causes at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel at the age of 86.

Roald is survived by his wife LaVonne of Mabel; a son Robert (Lynn); a daughter Rebecca (Edward) Stanton of Ft. Bragg, California; grandchildren Elsa Stanton, Forest and Meadow Selness; a sister Ruth Ganrud of Loveland Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Paul, Edward, and Harold; and two sisters Anna Selness and Martha Henzler.

Memorial services will be 11 AM Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the Highland Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove with the Reverend David Andreae officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 7 PM Friday, November 19 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
