Frances J. Seim, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, April 22, 2005 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral in Decorah. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah.

Friends may call from 12 P.M. until the time of services on Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

Frances Jane (Taylor) Seim was born July 8, 1924 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Clyde and Margaret (Davis) Taylor. Frances was a graduate of Decorah High School with the Class of 1942. She was very active during high school, belonging to the Declamation Team, the Drama & Theater group, Glee Club, GAA, Commercial Club, the Viking Newspaper and also served as her class treasurer and class vice president.

Frances attended Luther College for a year before she began working as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, helping construct B-24 bombers in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1943-1944.

She was united in marriage to Lester L. Seim on February 8, 1945, and after the war, the two of them settled in Decorah on Twin Springs Road where she lived the remainder of her life. They celebrated their 61st anniversary on February 8, 2005.

During the first ten years of her married life, Frances was a bookkeeper for several of her father’s businesses in Decorah, including Taylor Hardware, Taylor Sand and Gravel and for two farms.

After moving to a 40-acre farm three miles west of Decorah in 1955, she worked with Les, first in the mink ranching business for 27 years and then the hardwood lumber business (Walnut Cottage) for approximately 30 years. She enjoyed house building projects, decorating; and having friends and relatives over for get-togethers and Christmas holidays. She also loved her many pets.

Frances was an active member of the Eastern Star Decorah Chapter #73; the American Legion Auxiliary; the Elks Ladies Auxiliary and the Decorah Hospital Unit. She was very involved in organizing and hosting many class reunions, not only for her class, but also for Les’ high school class of 1938.

Frances was a devoted daughter to Clyde and Margaret, a loving mother to Shelley and grandmother to Ryan, and a wonderful wife and companion to Les. She will be dearly missed by her family and many, many close friends. Goodbye for now Frances; We will always love you and keep your memory in our hearts forever.

Frances died on Friday, April 22, 2005 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah at the age of 80 years.

Survivors include her husband, Lester of Decorah; a daughter, Shelley Seim Cassady and her husband Tim of Hamilton, Ohio; a grandson, Ryan Louis Seim Cassady of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, Dave (Marlene) Taylor of Decorah and her cat, “Red”.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to PAWS of Winneshiek County or the Eastern Star, Decorah Chapter #73.
